Preparing the dough at Laroti Panderia
B

read was not always top of the game in Mallorca when it came to favourite local foods. A simple baguette or pan moreno (brown bread), were often the main selections. But in recent years, young pastry chefs and self-taught bread lovers have been opening small shops across the island, where they are practising traditional bread-making techniques using ecological ingredients with a focus on sourdough-style breads. The results could not be more delicious. This is our list of the top artisan bread shops in Mallorca:

Thomas’ Bakeshop

When Thomas’ Bakeshop opened in Santa Catalina in 2019, it was a game changer in the local bread offerings. Located steps away from the indoor market, this artisanal bakery takes bread-making to the next level, offering a wide selection of masa madre sourdough loaves, from classic white to nut-studded creations. This family-run business also features pretzels or fougasse, olive bread and a small selection of cakes and pastries. The aroma alone is enough to draw you in, and once you taste their bread, you'll understand why it has a devoted following.

Uco Bakery

Uco Bakery quickly gained a following for its focus on Sourdough, they have a small storefront located in front of the Mercat Olivar in central Palma that opened in 2022, and you can find their flagship store in the Jaime III region where you can actually see the obrador making the bread. The owners of Uco are incredibly passionate about what they do. All of the breads are made by hand using local and quality ingredients and they are all about making bread in a creative, holistic and sustainable way. All of their creations are delicious including the pistachio and dates bread or the olive bread. Uco also offers workshops on sourdough so that others can get involved too - this is not a place you want to skip out on! Deliveries are possible.
