Jennifer Warren Gash and her husband Alexander moved to Mallorca from Costa Rica and soon set up their landscaping and garden design business, Mashamba. Believing that ‘memorable experiences come from magical settings’, the two talented entrepreneurs work together to create beautiful outdoor spaces of all sizes – from large open gardens to smaller terraces – that embrace Mediterranean culture and its lifestyle. While Alexander focuses on the landscaping and plants side of things, Jennifer is the Curator of Outdoor Living, mixing art and design for inspiring settings.

When did you start Mashamba? What motivated you to launch your own business?
JWG

We started in 2008 when we first arrived to Mallorca, although we were operating with a different name at that point. We evolved into Mashamba as our business and portfolio grew.  We have both always been entrepreneurial spirits as we like to have time to enjoy life on our own terms.

BD
Alexander, the lead garden designer, has led a very international life and has been long connected to wildlife and nature. What about Mallorca captivated him or enticed him to settle here?
JWG

It is about the right balance between the relaxed outdoor lifestyle but with a side of civilization that we like to have access to. We both moved to Mallorca together in 2008 from Costa Rica. I sometimes joke that we upgraded from flip-flops to sandals with our move.

BD
Beyond certain plants or trees, what evokes an ideal Mediterranean Garden in your mind?
JWG

Long summer evenings, laughing and talking late into the night with friends …..enjoying simple, fresh, delicious food and good conversation – in an al fresco setting of course!

"S’Hort del Rei and Jardi del Bisbe are probably my favourite gardens to visit because you can easily walk to them when you are in Palma."

Tell us about your terrace design services as well.
JWG

I have recently transitioned my role/title to that of Curator of Outdoor Living, and terrace design is a part of the service that I offer. I bring the magic to any outdoor living setting whether it be a terrace, penthouse, yacht, within the garden, a covered porch, anywhere clients want to experience being outdoors in comfort and style.

I have started building a portfolio of artworks that I have curated for my client’s projects – garden sculptures, outdoor wall art, etc. Art is one of the elements that I want to focus on to really emphasise and elevate the outdoor living experience.

With more than a decade of experience, I have a curated approach to any project I take on or any item I source for my clients.  That means that I have the knowledge and expertise to deliver the complete service – design, sourcing, installation, project management – with exceptional attention to detail and taking care of my clients with a personalised service.

Are there any gardens or parks on the island that inspire you or that you love to visit?
JWG

S’Hort del Rei and Jardi del Bisbe are probably my favourite to visit because you can easily walk to them when you are in Palma. I particularly like to sit by the water in Jardi del Bisbe for a moment of tranquillity.

BD
What’s an ideal Sunday for you on the island?
JWG

We like to get out and explore the quiet, remote beaches and hiking trails in Mallorca. We normally get up early and beat the crowds and then go for a nice lunch at a beautiful location. We’re both early birds, so for us it the best way to enjoy the island.
