aüa is the first bean to bar chocolate factory in Mallorca. It is a project built from the love and respect for cacao, the land, and a desire to bring an artisanal and locally produced chocolate to the island. Founded in 2020 by Silvia and Jaume, Maüa is a young company that has grown quickly in the last four years. The couple met in Nicaragua, where Silvia was working in the field of psychology and education, when she met Jaume, who is from Mallorca but was living in the country and traveling around Central America as a representative for a cacao and coffee importer. They both had a deep appreciation for the history and beauty of cacao – Jaume as an agronomist and through his over 10 years of experience in Central America, while for Silvia, cacao was a fruit she knew and loved since she was young; Her grandparents had cacao trees in their garden and they would often make delicious drinks and sweets from the fruit. When the pair decided to move back to Mallorca and were considering their next career move, the pandemic arrived, so with time on their hands and a growing curiosity, they began making small batches of chocolate bars for friends and family.

While the pandemic subsided, their passion for making chocolate grew stronger and they took over a very tiny space in Palma, from where they could develop new products and increase production. The demand and interest for their chocolate was immediate and the couple were excited by the possibility of what they could do, adapting quickly to meet requests.

As Maüa continued to develop, it came time to find a larger space where they could really settle in and expand their team. This factory and boutique space, which opened in December 2023 on Calle Blaquerna, is a perfect reflection of Maüa’s ethos: transparency, craftsmanship and community. The light-filled and inviting space was designed by Mallorca-based Munarq. The boutique is made using natural materials and an earthy palette to create a warm and welcoming space. The factory features floor to ceiling street facing windows so that passersby can see what is going on inside. As Silvia says, “It is important that people can see what we are doing and that we are completely transparent about the process of what we are making." Maüa also offers hands-on workshops about chocolate so people can learn more about the process. In this way, they share their knowledge and passion with others, and more people can discover what they do.
