Contain Studio's Alabaster Collection
I

n the last several years, Mallorca’s reputation as a centre for contemporary design and craft has become increasingly well established. In Palma and around the island, designers and makers are setting up studios and creating beautifully handcrafted pieces using local, natural materials and taking inspiration from the rich Mediterranean traditions of Mallorca. The island’s heritage with stone, glass, textiles and ceramics goes back centuries, with many of the techniques still used today thanks to the interest of the new generation of makers to learn from master artisans and continue the traditions for the future.

Contain, a lighting and design brand with a studio in El Terreno, was founded in 2017 by Juan Peralta and Mauricio Obarrio. Arriving from Argentina, the pair started Contain specifically with the intention of utilising Mallorca’s natural resources. All of their custom-made lighting is produced in their studio using stone, glass, metal, and a new collection of alabaster. Their collections include chandeliers, pendants, wall and standing lamps, and a capsule collection of furniture and accessories.

La Pecera was founded by industrial and interior designer Marlene Albaladejo. Her brand, Ediciones de Diseño LPM, features a collection of furniture and objects inspired by traditional forms and iconic styles. It is produced with master craftspeople on the island, using materials such as wood, leather textiles and cord. Albaladejo also designs bespoke pieces for clients. Pictured on the homepage and above is her collaboration with Textil Bujosa, the family-run textile company in Santa Maria. La Pecera also has a beautiful boutique in Palma, where she sells a selection of her own work as well as additional vintage treasures.

"Hardwood meets geometric patterns," as the website of Studio Jaia, a small design studio based in Palma, states. Studio Jaia was founded by Anna Lena Kortmann, an interior architect who worked in Germany and Los Angeles before moving to Mallorca to start her own line of furniture. The collection is Inspired by  traditional Mallorcan weaving techniques and patterns. Using recycled cotton cording, she weaves the geometric patterns onto her handcrafted wooden furniture – chairs, stools, and benches, using soft tones of greens, beiges, whites or greys. Studio Jaia recently collaborated on a capsule collection of shoes and accessories with Spanish brand Lottusse 1887.

Toni Fuster, of Studio Islas, designs a range of lamps that combine a Mediterranean colour palette with distinctive textures and shapes.
