Margarita Payeras Caldés, founder of the sustainable fashion brand Suro Swimwear, is one of those visionaries who has successfully combined design, quality, and environmental responsibility. With roots on the beautiful island of Mallorca, Margarita has created a line of swimwear that not only celebrates Mediterranean aesthetics but also respects our oceans by using recycled materials. We spoke to Caldés about her journey, her philosophy on sustainability, and the values that shape each of her collections.

Hello Margarita! Can you tell us a little more about yourself?
MPC:

I am a designer and the founder of Suro Swimwear. I was born and raised in Mallorca, where summers are always spent in the water. Swimming has always been second nature to me, whether in the sea or the pool. I always looked forward to my birthday in May because it meant getting a new bikini or swimsuit—my favorite clothing item, the one I enjoyed choosing and wearing the most. I studied fashion design in Barcelona and later returned to Mallorca, where I worked for several years with the Cortana team and later with Cristelmare, a swimwear brand that introduced me to the world of beachwear and sparked my desire to bring my own vision to life.

What is your vision of sustainable fashion, and what led you to create Suro Swimwear?
MPC:

Suro was born from my desire to find swimwear that combined design, quality, and sustainability. I realized that it was possible to create swimsuits and bikinis using recycled fabrics without compromising aesthetics. When I started Suro in 2016, finding sustainable swimwear fabrics was a challenge. At a textile fair, I only found one stand offering recycled lycra, but I was lucky that it was a high-quality fabric made from nylon recovered from abandoned fishing nets in the sea. It convinced me from the start.

At that time, sustainability was a distinguishing factor because it was not common in the industry. Today, I am very happy to see that this has changed, with more and more brands opting for recycled materials—not as a rarity, but as a standard. I want Suro to stand out for other reasons: design, quality, and aesthetic vision. Sustainability should not be an added value; it should be intrinsic to fashion design. At Suro, it is part of every decision we make. This year, for example, our hangtags are made from recycled algae-based paper, and the strings we use to attach them are biodegradable. Even the woven label inside each swimsuit, which indicates composition, is made of recycled polyester. We are always looking for sustainable options.

ASC:
What values do you want to convey through Suro Swimwear?
MPC:

After eight collections, we can confidently say that one of our core values is durability. We design swimsuits and bikinis that stand the test of time in both quality and style. The way we construct each piece, the fabrics we choose—from the outer lycra to the lining—and the technical details, such as elastics, are designed to withstand sun, salt, and chlorine. We are happy to see that many customers continue to wear pieces from our first collections and add new ones each year, mixing and matching them in unexpected ways. Our collections are designed so that you can keep adding pieces and playing with them, creating your own personal Suro wardrobe. This is only possible because quality is at the heart of everything we do.

“Suro is synonymous with the Mediterranean. It was born in Mallorca in the summer of 2016. The name comes from when my grandfather taught me to swim using a small cork float called ‘Suro’ in Mallorcan.”

ASC:
What kind of materials do you use, and where are the collections made?
MPC:

We use high-quality lycra made in Italy. The nylon in this fabric comes from fishing nets recovered from the sea, helping to reduce plastic waste in the ocean. This lycra, as well as the lining, is Oeko-Tex certified, ensuring it meets the highest sustainability and safety standards. Our lining is not just any lining. It is a fabric made in Barcelona, a thinner lycra than the outer fabric but strong enough to provide coverage. This allows us to prevent transparency in light colors without compromising comfort or aesthetics. It’s a precise balance between thickness and lightness, designed to make each piece as functional as it is beautiful.

Regarding production, everything is made in Barcelona, in a workshop specialized in high-quality swimwear. Finding the right workshop was a challenging process, as I was looking for a place that could deliver the specific finishes I had in mind. After much searching, I was fortunate to find a company that met all my expectations, and since then, I have always worked with them. Over the years, my relationship with the workshop has evolved, and now we work together to perfect each piece, maintaining constant communication and a shared commitment to improvement.

Who is the target audience for Suro Swimwear, and where can we find it?
MPC:

Suro’s target audience is broad because it is more about a style than a specific age group. Initially, when I developed the business plan, I had a defined age range in mind. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that our bikinis appeal to women of all ages. In fact, there are families where every woman—from the grandmother to the granddaughter—wears Suro swimsuits, and that deeply moves me.

Although we cannot yet cover all sizes due to production and style limitations, we are committed to expanding. This year, we added a couple of pieces in XS and XL after listening to customer requests. However, not the entire collection is available in all sizes yet. We are working on it and hope to offer more variety in the future. Suro is designed for women who value quality and design as much as sustainability. We don’t follow fleeting trends; we create pieces that can be worn year after year.

In addition to our online store, we also have physical retail spaces during the season. This year, starting in April, we will be available at the niche perfume and cosmetics space Institute Palma, where customers can try on swimsuits by appointment in an exclusive showroom. In summer, we will return to Datura Studio Isla in Deià, creating an offline connection for customers to see and try our pieces. We have also created an exclusive collection for Grupo Portixol, available in their hotels, as well as at Palma Tennis Club. We strive to make the brand work both digitally and physically. This year, we are also expanding into Sweden. Our swimsuits will be available there, and we will soon share more details on specific retail locations. While we previously distributed in Japan, Australia, and Italy, we have adjusted our strategy and are now carefully selecting new sales points to grow the brand sustainably.

How does the island of Mallorca influence Suro Swimwear?
MPC:

More than direct inspiration from the island, my approach comes from a personal aesthetic vision. I am inspired by minimalism, architecture, fashion, and art. To me, a swimsuit is more than just swimwear—it is an extension of the wearer’s style and attitude. It is a challenge: with just a few centimeters of lycra, I aim to make a woman feel dressed, confident, and true to her own style. It must be balanced, precise, and elegant.

While our production is not local—our swimsuits are made in Barcelona—we feel part of a design scene that promotes sustainability and responsible production, a movement very present in Mallorca. On the other hand, Mallorca allows me to test prototypes firsthand, swim in the sea even in November, and observe how colors interact with natural light. These tests are an essential part of the process, made possible by the proximity of the sea, allowing me to assess both the functionality and aesthetics of each piece in a practical way.

ASC:
Can you tell us about your future projects and dreams?
MPC:

Although the brand is still small and I oversee the entire process, I have always had a fundamental team that has made Suro a reality. In the long term, my dream is to have a more structured team, but for now, I continue with the support of my collaborators. I also want to grow, diversify the products, create swimwear for men and children, make the brand less seasonal, and offer pieces for colder months.

Even if I haven’t achieved all my goals yet, I feel I have already accomplished something important: making it this far and learning every day. As our brand motto goes: Thank you for swimming with us and respecting our oceans!
