Keweing Gallery, Palma
F

or a small island, Mallorca is home to some fantastic contemporary art galleries that feature dynamic curatorial programming that is on par with any big city. With exhibitions by artists from Mallorca, the mainland as well as internationally, the galleries in Mallorca support the local art scene while also offering an opportunity to discover new talent and the latest work by established artists working in painting, sculpture or conceptual art. Of course, there are galleries located across the island, but Palma is where you will find the majority of them, many of which can be visited in one afternoon. In the old town of Palma, several top galleries are located in beautiful old palacio’s dating from the 17th century, while others opt for more contemporary spaces a bit out of the city centre.

ABA Art Lab is a gallery located near the Es Baluard Museum. Many of their artists are from the Balearic Islands or are currently living here. Painting and sculptural works connected to nature or the island are often underlying themes of some of the artists they work with, including Menorcan artist Antoni Pedraza Bagur, Lin Utzon, Danish born but living on the island for years, and Tatiana Sarassa.

Installation in Kaplan Gallery
Courtyard of Galeria Pelaires

Galeria Pelaires is Palma’s oldest gallery. Housed in a 17th century villa, the beautiful space on the charming walking street, Can Verí, was opened in 1969 selling work by Miro and Picasso and other leading artists of the day, such as Antoni Tapies. Across two spacious floors, the gallery presents exhibitions by contemporary artists such as painters Nicolas Woods, Jason Martin and Rachel Howard, Mallorcan artist Guillem Nadal and photographer Alain Urrutia, among others.

Kewenig Gallery, a German gallery, which has a counterpart in Berlin, has been on the island for years and presents work by painters and conceptual artists from different generations and cultures. Ghada Amer, James Lee Byars, Jose Davila and Elger Esser are just some of the established artists with whom they work with. The gallery has two spaces in old town Palma, one of which is housed in an historic chapel with high roofs and unique architectural features.

Kaplan is a gallery with a very dynamic and international edge. The various exhibition spaces are constantly rotating with installations by emerging and mid-career artists including Olaf Hajek, Aniya de Fries and Marta Font. There is a fun and laid-back spirit to Kaplan, and a welcoming staff. They also offer consulting services.
