From Earth to Canvas: Renée Hennig’s Journey to Raw, Natural Art

At just 30 years old, Renée Hennig has already lived a life rich in cultural diversity and creative exploration. Born in Berlin and raised in Namibia, her journey has taken her from the rugged landscapes of southern Africa to the vibrant streets of the German capital and now to the sun-soaked island of Mallorca, where she resides with her husband and young daughter. Renée creates art pieces deeply rooted in the natural world, merging natural pigments made from local rocks and soil with acrylics. Inspired by the textures and colours of her surroundings, the artist pays tribute to the beauty that nature provides, both in form and material.

What inspired you to move to Mallorca?
R.H.:

We’ve been to the island many times before and when we had our daughter, we knew we wanted a slow, free, sunny life, close to the beach, yet not too far away from our families. Because of that and so many other reasons Mallorca seemed to be the perfect choice. We spent one chilled spring morning at “Placa de Josep Maria Quadrado”, got ourselves a lovely coffee to go at Café Plumo and just felt all the right vibes and knew that this was it.

Can you tell us about your artistic journey before moving to Mallorca?
R.H.:

I’ve worked as a neurosurgical nurse before, but have always been a creative soul in so many ways. I started with sketches very early in life and kept that up for years. Sometime around 2020, I fell head over heels in love with structural textured art in combination with acrylics and knew that this would be my future. I have since exhibited in Madrid, Brussels, Berlin and now here in Mallorca.

How would you describe your artistic style?
R.H.:

I’m an intuitive artist and create natural, feminine, earthy and textured art on canvas, most recently more raw due to my newest found passion of making my own pigments. My art comes from the connection between my heart, my soul and my origin. This powerful bond between me and nature began with my life in Africa and ever since is being transferred into my art. Every detail, every texture is about earthy vibes, radiating warmth, comfort, simply the feeling of home.

"The island gave me the urge to be even more raw, natural and think more sustainably. Seeing so many different beautiful textures, rocks, soils, architectural inspirations throughout my day, gave me the idea to integrate that into my art."

What materials and techniques do you use to achieve the rich textures and organic feel in your work?
R.H.:

Most recently I’ve driven away from structure paste and got even more on the natural, organic side as I’m making my own pigments. Most of them are made of rocks and soil I collect around Palma - washed, mortared and three-time filtered. A lot of work but it’s absolutely worth it.

How did your art evolve after moving to Mallorca?
R.H.:

The island gave me the urge to be even more raw, natural and think more sustainably. Seeing so many different beautiful textures, rocks, soils, architectural inspirations throughout my day, gave me the idea to integrate that into my art pieces – whether it’s the inspiration or the actual elements I use to make my pigments.

How has living in Mallorca shaped your daily life and routine as an artist? Are there particular places on the island where you find inspiration?
R.H.:

I’d say I get my inspiration by day and get creative by night. Mallorca has blessed us with an even more tranquil life, where I can focus on our daughter by day and flourish as an artist by night. I cannot really narrow down my inspirations to a few places, it’s more the entire flair of this island, the structures of the walls, rocky landscapes and the overall earthy tones that fascinate me.

Are you interacting with the local art community? What challenges and rewards have you experienced as a part of the artistic community in Mallorca?
R.H.:

I’ve met many beautiful inspiring people from the art industry either via Instagram or in person. Most recently I had a little event where I exhibited my ULLASSA collection and I’m looking forward to so many different experiences yet to come. I always keep up to date with upcoming exhibitions and art competitions via an amazing artist WhatsApp group and can confirm that everyone here on this island is super open and welcoming. I love and appreciate that!

Are there any upcoming projects or exhibitions you’re excited about?
R.H.:

Currently all my available artworks are exhibited at Art from Mallorca concept shop on Carrer Concepció 13, Palma. I’m busy working on commissioned pieces right now and from October onwards I’m starting a big project, creating several custom art pieces for a new villa, which I am super excited about.

Last but not least, what's your favourite place on the island and why?
R.H.:

Now that we‘re living here, I‘d say that I‘m in love with Portixol and Molinar. It has our favourite small bay, cute places to eat, it‘s quiet, but still super close to Palma town. I love that combination.
