or the central display this year, they installed a beam from which they wove layers of greenery and branches, twinkling lights and an arrangement of colourful and artisanal ornaments. There is a subtle focus on birds – pheasants (a favourite of Mila’s), parrots, and other tropical birds – not typically Mallorcan but fun and festive. The ornaments come from places such as Estonia, Colombia and India. Lázaro says of working with Joanna, “For her, it’s a lab to experiment and for me, a time to change and do something new – it is a real collaboration.” They also do arrangements for Spring and Fall, a way of showing the passage of time and change of seasons.
This will be the third year that Lázaro collaborated with the artist Jaume Vilardell to create a special edition Bazaar calendar. This year’s theme focuses on Palma and some of its most symbolic imagery, but through an artistic lens, far from any tourist souvenir. Vilardell used watercolour to reflect some of the island’s important icons. He explains: “The approach combines the chronicles and drawings of the travellers who discovered the island in the 19th century with memories from my childhood. The illustrations capture details of the urban landscape that always aroused my curiosity: the sphinxes on the Passeig des Born, the hand-shaped door handle at Can Balaguer, the siurells that decorated our house and the ensaïmada. It is a look that claims a calmer and more authentic Mallorca, far from the masses. In order to give prominence to each element, I have isolated them from their surroundings, focusing on their shapes and details, seeking to convey a more intimate and evocative vision through the use of watercolour. This project is, in essence, an invitation to rediscover Palma and its little treasures from a personal and close perspective.”
The calendar is elegant, a work of art that reflects the heritage of Mallorca and the island before Instagram. As Vilardell notes, “the figure of the peasant evokes a pre-touristy Mallorca, austere and tied to the land. In all these cases, my intention was to capture its purest essence, avoiding folkloric clichés, to highlight its authentic link with the tradition and memory of the island.” The calendar and all of Bazaar’s beautifully curated holiday collection is available for purchase in the shop. It’s a perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.
