andals are summer essentials in Mallorca – if not for most of the year. Yes, the weather has much to do with the choice of having a casual open-toed accessory on your feet, but there is also a long tradition in the Balearics with sandal production. Across the island, it's common to see the espadrille, alpargata, and abarca, which originated as practical footwear for peasants, workers, fishermen, and even stone shooters back in the day. Made from local materials like leather and jute, these shoes were designed to meet the daily demands of island life. Over centuries, these simple yet sturdy designs have evolved into some of the most popular footwear on the island. Today, they are highly sought after and produced by prominent shoe brands that have established strong reputations in the industry. Here are some key names to look for when looking for that perfect sandal on the island:

Castañer, a distinguished footwear brand, epitomises the rich heritage of artisanal craftsmanship in Mallorca and the broader Balearic Islands. Renowned for its iconic espadrilles, Castañer combines traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic, offering a range of stylish wedges, flats, and sandals. The brand, which originated in 1927, revolutionised the fashion world by transforming the humble espadrille into a high-fashion staple after collaborating with Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s. Models, actors, aristocrats, and artists have worn Castaner espadrilles, like Marilyn Monroe and Salvador Dali, to name a few. Today, Castañer remains a testament to the enduring allure and quality of Mediterranean craftsmanship, continuing to operate from its base in Spain and exporting its designs worldwide.
