Castle at Capdepera during sunset
A

cross Mallorca, there are remnants of the island’s long and storied past – including Roman ruins, prehistoric structures and Moorish treasures among them. We’ve told you about the must-visit historic sites in Palma, but here we offer a look at several stunning historic locations in other parts of the island that are well worth a visit.

Defensive Beauty: Walls of Alcudia

Walking along the Walls of Alcudia feels like stepping back in time. This medieval town's fortified walls and gateways safeguard centuries of stories, while the cobbled streets echo the footsteps of past inhabitants. Enjoy breathtaking views of the town, architectural buildings, and the nearby sea from the top of the walls, a vantage point that is as panoramic as it is historic. Be sure to visit the local shops of Alcudia and enjoy a meal in town while you are there.

The Fortress of Serenity: Castle at Capdepera

The Castle at Capdepera, a hilltop fortress in northeast Mallorca, combines history with spectacular views. This 14th-century castle, with its preserved ramparts and the iconic watchtower, overlooks the neighbouring island of Menorca on clear days. Capdepera is not just a historical site, but it is also a place of quiet and contemplation, a spot to enjoy a serene sunset after a day of exploring this tiny, charming village. Combine it with a visit to the nearby town of Arta.

Can Prunera Museum: A Modernista Marvel

In the village of Sóller, located on the main pedestrian street, the early 20th-century mansion, Can Prunera, stands as a testament to the influence of Art Nouveau throughout Catalonia. The intricately detailed ironwork, vibrant tiled floors, and exquisite stained glass windows reflect the prosperity of the Sóllerics returning from France at the turn of the 19th century. Now a museum, Can Prunera invites visitors to marvel at its architectural grandeur while perusing the intriguing modern and contemporary art exhibitions within its walls.

Santuari de Lluc: A Spiritual Oasis Amidst Nature

Deep in the Tramuntana mountain range, the Santuari (Monastery) of Lluc stands as one of Mallorca's most revered religious sites. The 17th-century basilica, a harmonious blend of Baroque and Renaissance styles, hosts the cherished statue of 'La Moreneta,' the Black Madonna. Besides its religious allure, the complex features a museum, botanical garden, and choir school, offering a tranquil retreat amidst nature's grandeur.

Santueri Castle: A Moorish and Christian Battleground

Perched on a precipice amidst the flat agricultural landscapes of the southeastern part of the island, Santueri Castle is a reminder of Mallorca's combative past and its need for solid defensive architecture. The Moors built up the castle beginning in the 8th century, but during the conquest of Jaume 1, which led Mallorca to become Mallorca, it was taken over by the Christian army and became a critical marker on the island until its transformation into a tourist site in the mid-1800s. This cliffside fortress commands an expansive view over the southeastern coast. Wander around the ramparts and ruins, along the rocks and pathways while you imagine the dramatic past of Mallorca. Have lunch in nearby Portocolom or Felanitx, both cute villages to enjoy.

Mallorca's architectural wonders offer a journey through time and reveal the island's volatile history and enduring charm. From historic walking areas, landmarks, churches, gothic architecture, and art nouveau styles, you'll be treated to the marvels of this spectacular island. Some other notable sites include Capilla de Santa Ana and the Palace of la Almudaina.
