allorca has a dynamic design scene and many interior designers and architects. Yet, often the two don’t connect, and that is a missed opportunity for both. Enter Mallorca Makers, a new initiative launched by Mallorca-born textile artist Leela Romeo, with a board of advisors that includes Gloria Dominguez, Roul Fielder, Matilda Sjöberg, Noelia Pascual and gallerist Natalia Bento, with the objective of bringing together local artisans and designers with leading interior designers, architects, and people from the hospitality and real estate industries. Romero writes, “Mallorca Makers was born out of appreciation for the island’s unique culture and a desire to change how we approach design and decoration. As a place where ancient craftsmanship meets contemporary ideas, Mallorca offers an abundance of talented makers that deserves to be recognized and shared with its visitors.”

Whether for private residences or larger hospitality projects, there is shared interest in bringing into those spaces aspects of the island’s rich history with craftsmanship and in supporting the independent makers who are creating unique, handcrafted objects. “Mallorca Makers isn’t just about beautiful designs, it’s about starting a movement that celebrates tradition, embraces innovation, builds connections and defines luxury in a way that’s intentional, sustainable, circular and deeply connected to the island’s culture,” says Romeo.

The initiative also promotes a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to interior design by using locally made products that are very often made with local or recycled materials such as wood, ceramic and glass. Mallorca Makers will work with the buyers to source the right pieces for their project including special commissions, while for the designers, it offers a platform to share their work and reach a wider audience. Mallorca Makers want to help build a community and strengthen relationships for ongoing collaborations and growth.

The organization  had their first community presentation at Natalia Bento Gallery, in Alaro, earlier in April and they are now in the midst of a Go Fund Me Page to raise the initial funds to design and build a website to help launch the project. Visit their instagram page to learn more.
