The Location Lowdown
The Brief

Santa Ponsa, a contemporary town in the southwest of Mallorca, offers an exclusive, cove-like setting. It's strategically positioned between Andatx, Calvia, and Magaluf, nestled in a protected cove. This locale has gained popularity since the 1960s, evolving from a quaint town to a prominent destination. Its allure, particularly among international visitors, has made it a coveted spot for homeownership in Mallorca.

History

The history of Santa Ponsa traces back to 1229, marked by the settlement of Jaume I and his troops during the establishment of Mallorca. This significant event is celebrated annually in a fiesta honouring Jaume I. While Santa Ponsa now showcases modern developments, its small old town area still reflects its rich historical past.

What to do

Santa Ponsa is a hub of activity with its local shops, cafes, and restaurants that cater to both tourists and locals. The town is renowned for its two main beaches: the expansive Playa de Santa Ponsa, a blue flag beach known for its cleanliness and ample space, and the smaller, secluded Playa Pequeña. Besides beach activities, Santa Ponsa is home to the local nautical club, a tennis club, and three golf courses, all easily accessible. As mentioned before, Les Festes del Rei en Jaume is a must when in Santa Ponsa. This is one of the biggest events, celebrated to commemorate the landing of King Jaime I in 1229, marking the beginning of the reconquest of the island from the Moors. The festivities include a wide array of cultural and leisure activities such as concerts, exhibitions, a medieval market, parades, traditional dancing, and sports events.

Landscape or outdoor life

The town's geographical setting just off the main MA-1 highway offers convenient access to the rest of the island. The Tramuntana Mountains, to the north and east of Santa Ponsa, provide a stunning backdrop and opportunities for outdoor adventures. The area's outdoor amenities make it an ideal location for those who appreciate both beach life and mountainous landscapes.

Why we love it

For its fusion of Mallorcan charm and contemporary lifestyle, along with its breathtaking backdrop of the Tramuntana Mountains and stunning beaches.
