Nestled in the heart of the Llevant region of Mallorca lies Felanitx, a picturesque town where history meets the pulse of contemporary life. This enchanting destination, perched on sloping hillsides amidst a flat landscape, offers a stunning blend of scenic beauty and culture.

History

With a history dating back to the Bronze Age, Felanitx, whose name comes from the Latin ‘Fenalicius’ which means ‘where much hay is produced,’ has always been connected to the land and agriculture. It has been a site for wine production as well as brandy in a consistent way for nearly a century – if not longer. Settled in the 12th century, as Mallorca was being developed, it is home to a few monuments that reflect its importance on the island since the beginning. Its location, perched on the hilltops with sweeping views across the flat lands below, made it a great location to keep watch on invading parties. The Castell de Santueri, a fortress carved into the rocks, the monastery of Son Salvador, which sits high up on a peak isolated from the town, and the impressive San Miguel church built in the town in the 16th century, are all well-kept examples of the town’s past.

Wine enthusiasts can embark on a journey through local vineyards, delving into the town's viticultural history and sampling exquisite wines. For a taste of local cuisine, the town's caper production offers a unique insight into a key ingredient of Mallorcan and Mediterranean dishes. Additionally, Felanitx's markets and festivals provide a glimpse into traditional Mallorcan culture, with the opportunity to savour local delicacies and crafts. Felanitx celebrates several important fiestas, the most notable among these include the Fira de Maig (May Market), celebrating the onset of spring; the Fira de Santa Margalida, honouring the town's patron saint; the Fira de Sant Agustí, a vibrant summer festival; the Fira de Sant Miquel, commemorating the Archangels; and the Fira del Pebre Bord, a unique festival focusing on local cuisine and traditions. There are a handful of local businesses here, from small boutiques to antiques shops, restaurants and cafes that showcase the creativity  of this town as well.
