Event Details

The 3rd edition of the Wipeout Film Festival takes place this weekend in Port Adriano. The festival opens its doors on Friday, September 20th at 17:30 and runs through Sunday evening.

The event was founded by three friends, Sergio Ruiz, Alvaro Iglesias and Miriam Pastor, with the idea of wanting to create an event around surfing, a subject that they all have a passion for and felt would have a positive reception on the island. After a few small events and screenings in hotels or bars, they launched the first official festival in 2022 and it has grown steadily the last 2 years, gaining more sponsors, support and followers.

This year will be the biggest edition so far, located near the water in Port Adriano. It will include music, food trucks, a market with local crafts, and family friendly activities, including a morning paddle out on Saturday at 11am that hopes to spark people’s interest in marine conservation. But the heart and soul of Wipeout are the short films and documentaries about surfing that come from around the world. In addition to beautiful films with gorgeous waves and intense surfing are other films that use surfing within the context of something deeper, such as gender issues, the environment or war. They find the films through their own research and scouting and talking with the filmmakers. Ruiz, who by day is a marine biologist and works for Save the Med Foundation, states, “Wipeout uses surfing as a vehicle to spread other messages about the environment, nature and one's own self. Surfing is the main thread, but there is more to it.”
